World Firefighters Games 2008 - Volunteers Wanted!
The World Firefighters Games 2008 will be staged in Liverpool from 25th August- 3rd September 2008 and is open to firefighters from around the world. It is a biennial competition where firefighters and their families from all over the world compete in numerous and varied sporting events.
The World Firefighters Games is an international sporting event initiated by a committee of international firefighters. Since its launch, the initiative has been more and more successful and has had a growing social impact and following.
The Games have been running since 1990 and has attracted thousands of athletes and their families from all over the world. This is the 10th Games and previous hosts include places like Las Vegas, Sydney, New Zealand, Canada, Paris and Hong Kong, usually attracting in the region of 5000 competitors. The Games are self-financing and are intended to make a small surplus that is reinvested in local charities.
The Games last for 10 days and is centred in and around Liverpool with some events taking place in venues ranging from Southport to Derbyshire and Manchester to North Wales. The Games will feature 70 sporting events covering numerous disciplines and whilst the emphasis is on participation, competition is fierce and the last time the Games were held in the UK two British national records were broken. These events, which are too numerous to mention here, include most traditional sports but also have some unique themed events that attract international attention such as the fire truck challenge, the stair run and the toughest firefighter alive.
